What Is Weight Loss Counseling?

Weight loss counseling involves using cognitive-behavioral strategies (Cognitive Therapy for Weight Loss) to help you change the way that you view food, nutrition, and exercise. It also includes helping you change the way you view yourself and how you react to different situations in relation to your nutritional choices.

With ambition and goal setting comes mental and sometimes physical obstacles. As most people know, when it comes to setting, achieving, and maintaining goals, there are several mental barriers that pop up that can impede our progress. You can discover an easier and proven way to lose weight and feel better and help guarantee your future health and happiness. This is not about finding short cuts or wasting your time. This is about identifying and eliminating the psychological barriers and obstacles that inhibit your ability to stay motivated to achieving your goals. Many people have made statements; such as, “I want to lose weight, but my motivation comes and go’s”, “I just wish I could get out of my own way”, or “every time I get motivated, it seems something happens and I end up taking two steps backward”. Common issues that inhibit our ability to stick with a health or weight loss plan include:

1.    We set too lofty of goals (e.g. I want to lose 50 pounds by Christmas)

2.    We are too vague with our goals (e.g. my goal is to lose weight)

3.    We set our goals with the assumption we will be consistently motivated

4.    We do not plan for obstacles or barriers (or how we will adapt when they inevitably present themselves)

5.    We are outcome-focused; rather than process-focused

6.    We plan for achieving the goal, but don’t plan for maintaining our success

7.    We have a fear of failing

8.    Many people fear success because they think “what if I slip back to the unhealthier version of myself?”

Methods Used in Weight Loss Therapy

Strategies that work include effective goal-setting using trackable steps, self-monitoring, feedback, and reinforcement, incentivizing change, and boosting your self-esteem. When you change the way that you think about yourself and about healthy choices, it is much easier to lose weight. We help you to come up with your own goal plan and teach you to track your choices. We also encourage self-reflection and help you to identify areas in which change may be needed.

Weight loss therapy at Personal Evolution involves using a variety of approaches and strategies to help you change the way you think and feel about food, nutrition, and exercise. We utilize an eclectic framework that includes elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (helping you see the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors), Stage of Change/Motivational Interviewing (helping you understand your personal barriers to making changes), and Mindfulness-Based approaches to help you connect more to your physical, mental, and emotional self.
